The Toy Shop
32 Putney High Street, SW15 1SQ
For adults only! Relive your youth in this carefree Putney cocktail bar. If Peter Pan ever moved he’d relocate to Putney - The Toy Shop with its playful décor is packed full of nostalgia as it honors childhood.
Everything about The Toy Shop is designed with fun in mind – the cocktail menu has weird and wonderful options like alcoholic ice cubes carved into Lego men! The food menu caters for vegetarians and meat eaters alike too with specialties like ‘The Toy Shop BBQ’ - which comes served on your own mini revolving BBQ!

Oh and this place is open way past bedtime.

Everyone loves an ‘Underdog’
51-55 Bethnal Green Road
Concealed in the basement beneath the ever popular BrewDog, Shoreditch is where you’ll find the aptly named Underdog. You'll need to be chaperoned, probably by a very retro-clothed waiter down the stairs where you can expect beer-infused cocktails in a dimly lit bar with an abundance of charm. Bugsy Malone would feel at home here surrounded by snakes curled in jars, random taxidermy and small boxes inexplicably filled with human hair! This non-conformist bar is worth a visit if you’re looking for a drink in a place with a little more speakeasy sparkle.
It’s pretty weird – but we think we like it!
Opium
15-16 Gerrard Street, Chinatown
Only once you have found this place can you sample its incredible cocktails and delicious food. The true definition of a secret bar if ever there was one; Opium is concealed behind a very simple green door - you must buzz to enter and then climb a long dark stairway to the orient above.
Set over three floors the Asian cocktails and food with a contemporary London twist change seasonally making this the perfect destination for an opulent dinner and drinks. We promise you any date will be impressed!
The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town

12-16 Artillery Lane, Shoreditch, E1 7LS

Here's a nother secret bar in the city championing a new way to look at fridges. You’ll never look at yours the same again!
Enter a basement full of trinkets, vintage furniture and a bar clad in exposed brick and wood – hidden behind a Smeg fridge door!? Only accessible by a cheeky request to see 'The Mayor' at the Breakfast Club bar upstairs, The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is a bar with eclectic taste.
The food offering is small but delicious, it stocks only a small selection of spirits but this makes the cocktail list no less creative – we recommend the chilli and lemongrass twist on the Tommy’s Margarita!
Blues Kitchen Shoreditch
134 Curtain Road, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3AR
If there is one thing we love more than the blues it’s an East London drinking lounge playing the blues!
The menu features favourites like Buffalo wings, steaks and catfish, but it’s the drinks that steal the show with over 100 types of bourbon, draught beers from Hackney Wick and a selection of cocktails.
Set across two floors of this converted Victorian warehouse The Blues Kitchen’s décor is completed with flecked tiling and powerful furniture along with dim lit tables which sing out romance - it’s the perfect place to come to dine in the day and dance through the night.
These are just some of the hidden gems London has to offer – pay them a visit and let us know what you think.

A little friendly competition is a turn-on right? Well, we firmly believe that the best dates involve stepping out of your comfort zone and getting all sweaty in front of the general public… agreed? If you’re still unsure, check out our list of sporty date ideas for sporty couples… don’t be scared… game on!

The Classics: Bowling, mini golf, bike ride

You’re not likely to break much of a sweat with these dating activities, but it’s always good to warm up before strenuous exercise… so here are the classic standards, which should never be overlooked.

Ten-pin bowling – yes the local bowling alley may be full of pesky kids and arcade games, but it’s the go-to first date for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s great fun! You can break those barriers early on with some cheeky competitive banter and maybe some physical contact (we’re thinking high-fives only, mkay?!) Secondly, it’s less formal than a meal or drink date, so you can really relax and get to know each other whilst checking out your date’s moves. Just don’t crack any “ball” jokes.

Mini golf – if we learnt anything from the original Karate Kid movie (apart from how to wax a car) it’s that mini golf is a fantastic date. Cheap and cheerful, it may only last an hour at most, but you’re guaranteed a fun time and there’s plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your putting ability with a hands-on demonstration. How about placing a little wager on the game? Loser buys the drinks!

Bike ride – now we’re getting a little more serious for you active daters. A bike ride is a great no-frills way to get outdoors and explore new areas, whilst giving you the freedom to talk and be alone ;) Plan a nice bike through the country and stop off at a quaint pub for a cheeky beverage, or find a romantic lakeside trail with plenty of things to see. If you’re a city dweller, go on a little adventure to another part of town or combine it with a trendy restaurant date. No bike? Schemes like the Barclays Cycle Hire are perfect for the urban explorer who wants to spend their money on dates rather than cycling equipment.

The Main Event: Dance class, racket sports, skating

Now you’ve warmed up and the blood is pumping, it’s time to get a bit more physical…"physical!"

Dance class – for many people, the idea of popping on their dancing shoes and going to a salsa class as a first date would fill them with dread. And here at Flirtify, we’ll happily bounce around to Beyonce in the comfort of our own bedrooms, but should we fear the dance? “…er, nope!” Most dance classes have a fantastic, welcoming atmosphere whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete beginner. They will tailor each session to your needs so once you’ve got over the initial nerves, you’ll be having fun, twirling, kicking and doing THAT lift from Dirty Dancing in no time! Check out what’s on at your local dance school and get out there.

Racket sports – when thinking of sporty activities to do as a couple (not that), you can’t go wrong with a good old racket sport… think badminton, tennis and squash!
Get down to the local sports hall or tennis courts (romantic) and get active! Make it a proper date by providing snacks and drinks to keep your energy levels up, and make a sporty playlist to accompany your match… just play fair!

Skating – whether it’s ice, roller or snow, you’re almost guaranteed to make a fool of yourself on any skate date… but that’s part of the appeal! If you’re lucky enough to live near an ice rink or there’s an outdoor one around for Christmas – sooo romantic – then wrap up and get your skates on! You’ll have plenty of time to break the ice as you glide hand in hand, round and round, before enjoying a hot chocolate or mulled wine. For those warmer seasons, get down to the local 70s-inspired roller disco and get your freak on! Cool down afterwards with an ice cold bear or cocktail and compliment your date’s smooth moves.

For the Pros: Aerial gymnastics, rock climbing

For those feeling super adventurous, here are a few ideas to really get your heart racing!

Gymnastics – we’re not talking about your standard floor routine or balance beam gymnastics here. For those seriously active daters who want to keep fit and flirty, there are classes in aerial or circus gymnastics popping up all over the place! Hanging from rings, you and your date could be twirling and whirling your way into a flipping good date. Not for the fainthearted, this is a test for the hands and the heart!

Rock climbing – whether indoor or outdoor, a rock climbing date is the perfect way to build up trust in any relationship, new or old! Aside from being incredibly physical, you can show your confident side and support each other, whilst having bag loads of fun at the same time. Reach for the stars and you could be climbing up the mountain of love in no time! Say cheese!!

According to a new report it seems the popularity of beards and the three-day stubble look has taken its toll on the sales of male grooming products.

But with the beard being widely adopted by fashion-conscious men in recent years - perhaps thanks to celebrity proponents like Paul Rudd, Ian Somerhalder, Chris Pine and of course Tom Hardy, could face fuzz be here to stay?

Yes! (This makes us feel better for Santa!)

We associate beards with age, masculinity and dominance making the men wearing a beard more attractive to the opposite sex and also perceived as better and more protective fathers. There are other plus points too; as well as saving money on grooming products a beard will help to keep you warm in winter, they’re low maintenance - magic words, and they’re exclusive, as not everyman can grow one!

Check out some of the best celebrity transformations here proving beards can change even the most babyish face into a masculine hunter gatherer.

Our top 5 celebrity beard tamers…
1.     Alexander Skarsgard
2.     Brad Pitt
3.     Ryan Gosling
4.     Robert Pattinson
5.     Bradley Cooper

See what your chosen style says about you here.

No!

A massive 80% of women - much to our disappointment, said that they would prefer to see the return of the clean shaven face!

A huge 77% of women confessed to not kissing a guy due to them having a beard or stubble. Fear of being left with stubble-rash girls? It seems the majority of guys agree - despite this involving considerably more effort and blades on their part, saying a clean shave was better than facial hair for kissing.

Beards also present a few stumbling blocks in getting to that all important kiss too, like the food trap! No one wants to know what you’ve had for your lunch so guys if you insist on keeping the facial hair make sure you check the mirror for unwanted food scraps – or we’ll be skipping the kiss goodbye too!

Here’s what we think…

It comes down to this, beards suit some, and not others. Simple - once you decide which category you fall into that is!

… To beard or not to beard?

This is what the experts have to say: “Those who had been exposed to more beards preferred the shaven look and those who’d seen no evidence of bum-fluff at all found they really quite liked it.”

“It appears that beards gain an advantage when rare, but when they are in fashion and common, they are declared trendy and that attractiveness is over.” - researcher Robert Brooks.
We think overall that the yessss’ greatly outweigh the no’s. Perhaps in the case of meeting your date for the first time or your potential parents’ in-law though, the advice is to tame the mane - 84% of us believe a freshly shaven face is essential. After that you can grow wild!

Flirtify - Let's Grow Together
Famous for its exquisite architecture, Gothic cathedral and tangle of quaint cobbled streets, historic York is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway. But it’s not all about old buildings and history lessons, the city also has many surprises in store as vibrant cafés, colourful street entertainers and boutique shopping lie waiting to be discovered. We’ve picked a few of our personal favourites to get you off to a flying start…

York Minster

From the moment you enter the city walls, you’ll be captivated by the magnificence of your surroundings. And if there’s one building that epitomises the majesty of York, then it has to be York Minster – an absolute MUST SEE! One of the largest cathedrals in Europe, you and your partner can enjoy the impressive stone architecture from the outside (accompanied by an ice cream is perfect) or explore the beautiful interior features and atmospheric underground chambers. Bathed in light from the exquisite stained-glass windows, you’ll want to get married there and then! Just be sure to check what’s on before you visit though as someone may have beaten you to it...

Betty's Tea Rooms

If you’re feeling a little peckish, then it HAS to be Betty’s Tea Room – it’s a Yorkshire institution, don’t you know! Built in 1936 and inspired by the interior design of the Queen Mary cruise liner, this art deco delight is a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Share an Afternoon Tea for two downstairs and you’ll be transported back to the elegance of days-gone-by, as you nibble on delicate sandwiches and delicious sweet treats. Be warned, there’s usually a queue to the front door so allow plenty of time to stand around outside and cuddle.

York Dungeon

If a 70-minute journey through 2000 years of York’s murky and gruesome history sounds like a good way to spend your time, then look no further than the awesome York Dungeon! Combining a cast of theatrical actors, gory special effects, stages and some grim scenes, this exciting walkthrough experience is truly unique. It’s fantastic fun and a tad scary at times, so make sure you’re ready to protect your other half from the sinister characters that lurk in the dungeon – maybe not the place for a first date!

Rowntree Park & Reading Cafe

Outside of the city walls, York is a treasure trove of green, open spaces and parks. And if you’re looking for a romantic picnic setting or a book club meeting for two, then there’s no better place than Rowntree Park. A short walk from the city centre and on the banks of the River Ouse, this inspiring 30 acre park is open every day of the year apart from Christmas Day. Take a stroll through the woodland walks and tree trails or set up camp (not literally) on the banks of the ornamental lake and feed the ducks. On the other side of the water is the fantastic Rowntree Park Reading Café where you can borrow from a selection of 1,000 books whilst enjoying a lovely cuppa Yorkshire tea!

Bars & Restaurants
With a fantastic array of bars and eateries, from international cuisines to local delicacies, dining out in York is a gastronomic delight! Whether you’re looking to find that perfect first date venue or just sample something different, you won’t be disappointed. Top of our list is The Blue Bicycle, located just through The Shambles from the city centre. Serving award-winning food with an emphasis on fresh fish dishes, this is high quality dining in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Wander downstairs into the converted cellar and you’ll see images of the previous occupants who plied their trade when it was a turn of the century brothel! Enjoy a candlelit romantic dinner in the private vaulted booths - which are made from beds, of course - and work your way through the impressive wine list... what more could you want?!

If you're looking for a snazzy bar/restaurant/beer garden, that's a little different from the norm, then enter the colourful world of mysticism and travel inside the Evil Eye Lounge! From the outside, it might look like a quirky Bargain Booze (which it kind of is) but once inside, you'll be transported to a South American cafe-lounge style bar, serving beautiful Asian dishes (cool, right?) Relax in one of the wooden beds overlooking Stonegate or lounge around in the cinema room until you forget the outside world completely. Johnny Depp himself was a regular whilst filming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... so if it's good enough for Mr. Wonka...
Here at Flirtify, we're all for the unique and different, so we wouldn't usually suggest an Italian restaurant chain. But a special mention has to go to ASK in York, purely based on location alone. Of course the food and service is excellent, but it's the grandeur of the setting which will keep you and your date chatting for ages! Situated in the old Assembly Rooms on Blake Street, the original architecture of high ceilings, impressive stone columns and stunning chandeliers have largely been untouched – just count how many times you say, “wow!”

By, Sarah

I’d heard amazing things about this place before, so after reading your blog, Top Dates in Leeds, we had big expectations!

We had a drink in the bar to begin... Girls you have to have wine, there is a beautiful selection to choose from – if in doubt I recommend the Catena Zapata, Malbec which was delicious. But the reason I’m saying this isn’t for the wine at all, it’s for the wine glasses! They’re amazing and resemble something from an art gallery in London; even though I fear I’ve built them up, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Take Your Seats

Once seated I quickly had a look at the menu - it read like a map of a cow with fifteen cuts of meat to try, most presented on skewers of loveliness – I was immediately determined to try them all. After a quick explanation of how things worked by a lovely gentleman, we took a tour of the salad bar. Though I wouldn’t recommend wasting precious stomach space, I could have eaten from here all evening and not been disappointed; salad, cold meats, stuffed vine leaves – a personal favourite, sushi, roasted vegetables and a selection of dips and sauces. Resist filling up and remind yourself of the main event – carne, (beef in Brazil).

Main Event

Onto the main event - retuning to our seats we turned our cards to green – meaning ‘feed us’, and we’re poised to consume copious amounts of beef. You turn the same card to the opposite red side to signal you’d like a break. As we saw the first waiter with the big sword of meat, we said yes – the first of many more 'yesss' to come. This truly is a meat lover’s dream.

I was only introduced to steak around four years ago by my boyfriend, I cannot even begin to imagine why I didn’t eat steak or any beef for that matter until that night. Since then I’ve sought out restaurants from all over to go visit, so it may surprise you that my personal preference is medium-rare and the cuts of beef were cooked perfectly, full of juicy natural flavour.

Personal Preference

One of many couples that night, I overheard one request their meat a little more ‘done’, the waiter immediately left, returning with a different skewer of the same meat cooked to their liking which I thought was very helpful. In addition to all this meaty goodness, the waiters offered black pudding and chicken heart throughout the evening which we did try. Not exactly the food of love but really exciting none the less, I quite liked the taste of the black pudding however can’t say the same for the chicken heart - though don’t let me put you off.

For Dessert

As we emptied our glasses and the end of the night drew near, we enjoyed a coffee which perhaps stopped us from slipping into a food coma (I simply couldn’t face a dessert although they looked amazing). After 15 cuts of meat, chips and a plate from the salad bar we agreed we were ‘well-done’ and probably wouldn’t be hungry for a while.

I've had good experiences with beef before and this unique Brazilian, although a little less main stream, makes the cut. I highly recommend a visit – we’re planning our next.

Would I give up steak for love? Not after this I wouldn’t!

L O V E x

If you’re getting a little bored of the classic dinner date, and have found yourself going to the same restaurants, ordering the same food and having the same conversations, then why not shake things up a little? Check out a few of our alternative dating ideas...

1) A Fancy Wine Date

Take a trip to your nearest off-license, (try and find a ‘posh one,’ i.e. not the garage round the corner that sells a 4 pack of cider for £5). We mean one of those nice ones where the wine is stacked on wooden shelves with hand written notes, and they have hundreds of beers you’ve never heard of before. Ask the guy or girl behind the counter what they’d recommend, and go with it.
It might be pricey, but our thinking is this; spend whatever you would have spent on a dinner date on this fancy bottle and spend the evening enjoying it together. Go super romantic and head to a quiet spot in a park, or just cuddle up on your sofa. If the date goes well, you can keep the bottle as a little memento!

2) Rock Climbing
Whether you’re a total pro or a newbie, Rock Climbing is a great sport for a date. Mainly, because it’s not that aerobic so you won’t get all red faced and (too!) sweaty. It’s also a nice way to get ‘hands-on’ with each other and break down those body language barriers.

Exercise also gives us those happy hormones, putting us in the perfect mood for romance…

3) Bake Together
It’s the time of year again when everyone is in a baking frenzy (thankyou GBBO). Get messy in the kitchen with your date and bake your very own showstopper. Cupcakes are a fun and easy option, and you can have lots of fun decorating them when they’re ready.

Being in a kitchen with someone is always a good way of discovering more about their character – are they a complete control freak or really chilled out??

Cinnamon Swirl??

4) Dinner in the Dark!

Dans Lenoir is an incredible restaurant in London where food is served in the dark. The restaurant is pitch black, meaning that you can’t see your food, the table or your date! With blind waiters serving the food and being on hand to help you get around. It’s a truly unique experience that helps us re-evaluate our perception of taste and smell, in an open-minded atmosphere. Oh, and the food is amazing!

“The concept behind our menu is to re-educate our customers’ palates and minds, to make them truly experience the flavours being presented. Totally deprived of light, your eyes can’t deceive you, so therefore all preconceptions are gone.”

5) Watch the Sunrise
Not one for the first date (unless of course it went REALLY well). Wake up early, like 4am early, and drive out to the countryside to watch the sunrise together. Take a flask of coffee and a blanket and huddle up whilst you watch the day start. Afterwards, either take a walk or go for breakfast! …..and then go back to bed, because who wakes up at 4am?!

6) Theme Park

An adrenalin filled day trip to your nearest theme park will get the sparks flying! Hold hands on the scary rides and see if you can do the impossible and share a kiss as the photo is taken!
7) The British Music Experience

A permanent attraction on the top floor of the O2, featuring music memorabilia from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust costume to Noel Gallagher’s Union Jack Guitar. Explore British music from the defining sounds of The Beatles to more recent rockers like the Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead. The museum houses over 3000 images, 600 video clips and 3000 artist videos – the PERFECT date option for music loving couples.

8) Bring A Film!

Film tastes – a great conversation for any first date. Take it one step further and have a night in watching 2 films, you each get to pick one (your favourite). Cue debates / discussion and general ‘getting to know you’ chit chat.
9) Lucky Dip

Our favourite! Open up your local paper and turn to the gig listings, shut your eyes and pick one. Not a live music fan? Do the same with restaurants, or even cinema listings. You could end up doing something really exciting and different or you could end up seeing a Barry Manilow tribute act at your local. Either way, it’s something to talk about!
10) Gin Cocktails

Time out have collected ‘London’s Best Speakeasies,’ bars inspired by the 1920s prohibition era. Expect beautiful gin cocktails, jazz musicians and a retro dance code…

In fact, don’t save that one for a date, that’s just a great Friday night right there!

As the third largest city in the UK - after London and Birmingham for you pub quizzers! - Leeds is a bustling hotbed of culture, entertainment, shopping, food and drink. So whether you’re looking for that perfect first date, or stuck for something to do on a weekend, we have picked our favourite dates in Leeds for your delectation…

Everyman Cinema

OK, so if you read our guys guide to Choosing the First Date Venue, you’ll know we weren’t too keen on the old cinema-complex-date-thing. But when you throw in luxuriously comfy sofas, a glass of red wine and a slice of freshly made pizza, THEN you’re talking the Flirtify language! Situated within the Trinity shopping complex in the city centre, the Everyman Cinema features four and a half screens (seriously) showing a wide variety of mainstream, art house and classic films… if you can take your eyes off your date for long enough.

Kirkgate Market

Stay with us… yes, it’s a market, but it’s not just any market… this is the largest covered market in Europe!

Established in 1857 and situated in the heart of Leeds city centre, KirkgateMarket is a shopper’s paradise and an architectural beaut! From fresh food, drink and fashion to jewellery, hardware and haberdashery, you’ll be spoilt for choice. It was also the founding location of Marks & Spencer which opened as a penny bazaar stall in 1894, selling carbolic soap and scrubbing brushes to the working folk of Leeds – wow your date with that trivia! You’re welcome.

Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen

If all that walking has made you thirsty and you’re looking for a snazzy place to grab an ice-cold brewski, then head down to the Belgrave Music Hall in the north of the city. Spread over three floors, this unique venue hosts live music, comedy, film and art exhibitions and serves delicious canteen food, premium craft beers and amazing frozen cocktails (non-alcoholic drinks also available). So grab your hipster glasses, style your trendy facial hair and get out those sailor tats before heading down to the most hip and happening hall of them all – yes we’re down with the kids!

Royal Armouries

If - like us - you’re a bit of a culture vulture, then nothing says ‘exciting day out’ like a museum of weapons and armour! Located on the river-side of the recently developed New Dock, the Royal Armouries Museum houses a collection of over 75,000 objects. Stroll hand-in-hand through the display of medieval knights armour, Japanese shoguns, Wild West arms and other treasures from around the globe. Just try not to fall out during your trip – arguments in a museum of weapons can never end well. Rich (the new guy at Flirtify) says: “don’t miss out on the Hall of Steel – your man will thank you!”

Shopping (Aside from Kirkgate Market)

Christened as the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’, it would be rude not to indulge in a spot of shopping whilst in Leeds. From haute couture to vintage delights and everything in between, the high street offers a huge variety of shops. We suggest starting at the top of Briggate and working your way down! That way you can enjoy the world’s leading fashion brands (think Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood, Mulberry and Harvey Nichols) in the breath-taking Victoria Quarter, before your other half swiftly drags you away to the more wallet-friendly stores of the Trinity Centre.

Once you’ve reached the bottom (and if you’re still friends), turn left and head to one of our personal fave venues in Leeds – The Corn Exchange. This architectural masterpiece houses the very best creative, innovative and independent retailers in the city. Why not treat that special someone to a cute little gift to show how much you care? or to say sorry!

Roundhay Park and Tropical World

If you’d like to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre and get down and dirty with nature, then Roundhay Park is as beautiful a place to frolic as any!

Located just three miles north of Leeds, the park features over 700 acres of rolling parkland, lakes, woodlands, gardens and cafes. It is also home to the popular visitor attraction, Tropical World! Here you can explore various tropical habitats and see the amazing crocodiles, butterflies, bats, snakes, birds and the adorable meerkat family (simples!) If you close your eyes, you’d almost believe you’d escaped to an exotic paradise oasis… almost!

The Botanist, Salvo’s, Fazenda

Like a comic book hero, Leeds is smart and respectable by day and totally supercool by night! With more than 80 restaurants and 130 bars the city has a fantastic range for every occasion. We’ve picked a couple of cracking evening venues to get you started...

The Botanist is a place like no other; laid back, cool and unique it’s the perfect venue for a date-night. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a garden shed tucked away behind Trinity Church, with the assorted plant pots and tools hanging above rustic benches. But with an impressive selection of cask-ales, champagnes and ‘herby’ cocktails, the experience is unbe-leaf-able! You’ll both be horticultural experts before you know it… or you’ll be drunk.

Fazenda Bar & Grill might not be a great first date for vegetarians, but if the continuous tableside service of fifteen different prime cuts of meat sounds like your kind of thing, then saddle up and ride on over… and if your date asks, it’s a posh Brazilian BBQ!

Salvo’s restaurant in Headingley is a family institution – and for good reason! Established in 1976, this innovative Italian restaurant serves up delicious contemporary food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Priding themselves on a high quality family-run service, you’re guaranteed a romantic meal like only Italians know how to do! Good food… good drink… good conversation… good night ;)

Now you know where to go in Leeds, let's find you a date! Flirtify - Let's Get Together
