It's not all about the Sugar Hut!! Essex is full of awesome places to visit, so if you’re planning a date then we’ve got a few lovely little ideas for you.

(Don't get us wrong, we love the Sugar Hut - cocktails and possible celeb spotting. But you know, it's always good to have a wide range of choices...)

1) Colchester Zoo
Zoos are a classic outdoor date venue, and where better than Colchester Zoo set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes. With over 270 species to see, including Orang-utans, Penguins, Tigers and Tortoises, there’s a whole load of conversation to be had so you don’t need to worry about awkward silences. AND if you plan your trip ahead you get to feed the elephants and giraffes…

And obviously make sure you visit the gift shop. You can't visit a zoo without coming home with a toy Meerkat and safari hat.

2) Posh Pub Dinner at The Pheasant
Sitting on the Essex/Suffolk border, The Pheasant is a boutique hotel with a fantastic restaurant. It’s everything you’d want in a pub – beautiful oak tables, open fires and comfy chairs, coupled with award winning food and you’ve got a pretty great date venue.

3) Beth Chatto Gardens
Just outside of Colchester, the Beth Chatto Gardens are a picturesque landscape of plants, trees and ponds. It’s like a little paradise, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – the perfect escape. So if there’s a day date on the cards then take a wander around the gardens and enjoy the stunning scenery.

4) Made by You Pottery

Pottery making is a brilliant alternative to the more formal dinner date. It takes the pressure off conversation and is a really fun way to get to know your date.

Made by You is a family run Pottery Painting and Crafts Studio based in Leigh-on-Sea, that offers a friendly atmosphere where you can show off your skills! And if things go well, you’ll have a perfect memento for your first date...

5) A Trip to the Seaside
We HAD to include Southend, home to the world’s longest pier… (that’s 1.341miles btw!) Spend the day at the arcades and fun-fair for a bit of nostalgia and finish up with Fish and Chips on the beach. Oh, and don’t leave before you’ve had one of Rossi’s Ice-creams!

6) Audley End House & Gardens
Ok, stately homes don’t scream ‘excitement and romance,’ but trust us – Audley End is awesome. Experience real life period drama (upstairs & downstairs) and venture through the enormous house uncovering its exciting stories.

The stunning grounds with countryside views are ideal for a romantic stroll...

7) Oysters…
So apparently Oyster’s really ARE an aphrodisiac, (The Telegraph wrote a little piece about the rumour a few years back) - making them an ideal date food. And where else to have Oysters than the restaurant that claims to serve ‘some of the best oysters in the world...’

West Mersea Oster Bar is a fabulous little restaurant with a waterfront terrace – and comes highly recommended as a date venue (by us!)

Head out an enjoy the gems of Essex – and let us know if you’ve got any suggestions in the comments below.

Mid-week date? Do DIY Pizzas! It’s a chance for you to check out your date's cooking skills and mix things up a bit!...(With flour, eggs and milk..). We’ve got a super easy recipe for make it yourself scone-based pizzas, but feel free to adapt as you like, just keep that takeaway number nearby…

Scone-Based Pizza x 4
Ingredients

The Base

1 mug of self-raising flour
½ mug of butter
1 egg
150ml Milk
Paprika
Italian herbs
Salt & Pepper

The Sauce

1 can chopped tomatoes
1 red onion
Garlic puree
Capers
Olives
1 Red Chilli
4 rashers of bacon, cut into small pieces (leave out for a veggie recipe)

The Toppings
Grated Mozzarella & Cheddar
….And anything you want!
This particular recipe worked well with mushrooms, pesto and rocket.

Method

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 and get dough making…

2. Combine the butter and flour to a bread crumb consistency, then mix in your herbs & spices. Make a little well in the middle of the mixture.Whisk together the milk and egg and slowly add this to the flour stirring to make a dough like mixture.

3. Adding more flour if necessary, use hands to mould the dough into a ball and leave to rest

4. For the sauce, chop onions and fry lightly in olive oil, with the garlic puree and chilli. After 3 or 4 minutes add in the bacon – fry until slightly browned.
5. Stir in the capers, olives and chopped tomatoes – bring to the boil and leave to simmer for 20 minutes. Season to taste.

6. Whilst the sauce is simmering, roll out your dough into circular shapes. Or hearts, or your name, or a rectangle, whatever takes your fancy. Then bake in the oven for 10 minutes, or until slightly cooked.

7. Remove bases from the oven and load with your toppings! Return to the oven for approx. 15 minutes, or until the crusts are nice and crisp!
And there we have it, scone based pizzas. Happy cooking! X

P.S Keep an eye for out for our future DIY blogs - we've got fondou, chocolate truffles and all sorts on the horizon!

For any one that’s had their heart broken, you’ll know how difficult and really quite disastrous it can be! Especially if it came as a shock. Often, your partner is your best friend so having to lose that constant companion is really sad. And the loss comes with a whole load of stages before you’re fully recovered. The myth is that it takes twice as long as the time you were together to get over a break up – so if you were a couple for 1 year, it’ll take 2 before your heart is ‘fixed’ again.

We’re not too sure about that. You absolutely have to give yourself time to ‘mourn’ the relationship but there are ways to quicken up the recovery process. It won’t be drunken 1am phone calls, litres of ice-cream and sad loves songs forever!
So if you’ve just broken up, what can you do?

Acceptance
The most important thing is that you accept the break-up. Dwelling on the past and how things could be different will only delay your recovery. Everyone has a choice and a right to decide on their own path; if your partner decided that he/she didn’t want to be in the relationship anymore then that decision needs to be accepted.

It normally takes a while to come to that feeling of acceptance, because it’s a tough one. If you were happy it can be difficult to see it in any other way. But give it time, and you’ll see that accepting the decision is far better than hoping it will change.
Get Busy!

The likelihood is your partner took up a lot of your time, which means that when they’re no longer there you’ve got a whole load of empty hours to fill! So join clubs, see more of your friends, and offer to babysit for your nieces and nephews, do as much as you can to fill up your social calendar. Do lots of what you love to do and find something new to do! Start a new hobby, learn to play an instrument, go to Salsa lessons; not only will these things keep you busy it’s also great for your self-esteem.
Talk Talk Talk

We all know that talking about stuff makes us feel better – but sometimes it’s hard to do. Call on your friends and family and tell them what’s happened. It’s really important to have a strong support network around you, and talking the break-up over will help you come to terms with it.

Want to text your ex? Text a friend instead. Had one too many drinks and suddenly calling your ex seems to be the greatest idea? Call a friend instead. Most people will go through a break-up at some stage, so your friends will know just how to make you feel better – don’t be scared to ask for help.

Stop Stalking!
Social media is great, except in situations like this. It’s all too easy to know exactly what your ex is up to using Facebook / Twitter etc. But ask yourself this, is checking out their profile going to make you feel good? No. It doesn’t matter what’s on there, ‘Just got back from the gym, feeling great!’ Urgh, ‘Awesome night out – hanging today!’, bigger urgh. Best to avoid altogether.

It’s a little extreme, but if you don’t trust yourself to not browse through their pictures on a daily basis, then just block them. Maybe send an email beforehand to explain why. It’ll seem hard at the time, but it’s the healthy thing to do.
How do you know when you’re ready to date again?

This is completely different for everyone. It may take a couple of months, it might take a couple of years; but only start dating again until you’re ready. If anything, it’s unfair on your new date if you’re still mourning after the last! You’ll know when you’re ready, but there a few sure signs...
1)  Imagine how you’d feel if you saw your ex walking past you hand-in-hand with their new partner. If you think you’d be able to say a friendly ‘hello’, then that’s a good sign. If you think you’d run a mile, or throw your bag at them then yeah, perhaps not…
2)  When was the last time you checked there FB profile? If it was a while ago then that shows you’re too busy with your own life to care what their getting up to. Good sign!

3) Happiness – if you feel good, and happy, and confident then you’re ready!

This quote really sums it up for us…

“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.” - Maya Angelou

If you’re ready to bring the sunshine into someone else’s life, then you’re totally ready to start dating again.

So, chin up buttercup, it’ll get better. X

Summer has arrived! It’s time for BBQs, beer gardens, trips to the seaside and ice-cream….fingers crossed the weather will be as lovely this year as it was the last. Being the eternal optimists that we are, we’re sure that there will be days and days of beautiful sunshine ahead, so we’ve put together a little list of summer date inspiration….

1) The Seaside!
A trip to the seaside is a must during the summer holidays. Arcades, funfairs, dinky donuts and sticks of rock – so you’re not 12 anymore but a bit of nostalgia does wonders for romance. Brighton and Great Yarmouth are a great option for the above features, but if you fancy something a bit quieter and more relaxed, St Ives, Cornwall, is beautiful.

2) Water Balloon Fight

Call up your guy or girl and ask them to come over, present them with a bucket of pre-prepared water balloons and run!! Super fun, playful, and perfect for hot summer days.

3) Custom-made Drive-ins
Drive-In movies are pretty hard to find – they tend to be as part of a festival or event, but they are incredibly romantic so if you can’t find one, just DIY it. Charge up your laptop, pack some snacks and a blanket and head to a quiet spot in the countryside. Much more intimate and special than just sitting on the couch with a DVD!

4) BBQ
So what if there’s only two of you? We’re in Britain; if the sun is shining we should really have a BBQ. Both of you can contribute to the food supplies (whilst showing off your incredible cookery skills) and bond over burgers and potato salad. Make up a Spotify playlist of summer favourites (yes, we do mean UB40, Beach Boys and Peter Andre), get your finest plastic plates out and have a party.

5) Picnic
And of course,  the less smoky BBQ, the Picnic. Pack a hamper, pick a quiet spot, and light some lemon candles to keep away those pesky pests.

6) Strawberry Picking
Strawberry picking is a great way to get outdoors, do something active AND get to know your date. Afterwards you can take your pickings home and bake together – cute, hey? Click here to finda Pick-Your-Own-Farm near you >>

7) Tee Up!

Golf is a lovely way to enjoy the outdoors in a relaxed environment. Crazy golf or the real thing, you can bond over your mutual terribleness at it or help the other out with your golfing expertise.

Enjoy the sunshine! X

P.s. We’ll leave you with this…

Named as Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool is jam-packed with museums, galleries, restaurants, music venues….just about every sort of arts and culture outlet you could think of. Meaning that if you’re planning a date you’ll be spoilt for choice! We’ve picked out just a few of the city’s date perfect venues…

1) Cocktails at Alma de Cuba

Set inside the conversion of the former St.Peter's Catholic Church, Alma de Cuba is Liverpool’s most spectacular restaurant and bar. It’s a rich and eclectic mix of Cuba, Hispanic and Latin American influences – serving delicious food and innovative cocktails inspired by South America and the Caribbean.
Its buzzing atmosphere and grand setting makes it the ideal place for first date cocktails. We’d recommend the Lycheetini; from the ‘Alma Creations’ menu it’s an exotic mix of Finlandia vodka, lychee syrup, banana liqueur, pineapple juice and a sherbet and popping candy rim. But to be honest, they're all pretty great - so make sure you order up some food to avoid first date drunkeness!

2) Liverpool Museum

Img Src: http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/mol/index.aspx

A great rainy day date! The Liverpool Museum, sits in the centre of Liverpool’s waterfront, and is the most visited museum in the country (outside of London!). Exhibiting Liverpool’s history through the ages, it explores how “the port, its people, and their creative and sporting history have shaped the city.”
3) Afternoon Tea at Panoramic 34

Set 300 feet above sea level on the 34th floor of the west tower, Panoramic 34 offers 360 degree views of Liverpool – making for a stunning dining experience (and that’s just based on the view!) We’d recommend going for the Luxury Afternoon Tea, with delicious finger sandwiches, beautiful pastries and a glass of Perrier-Jouet Blason Rose.
It’s a little on the pricey side, but for a special occasion (or if you just feel like going fancy!) you can’t beat it.

4) FACT: Foundation for Art & Creative Technology

FACT is the UK’s leading media arts centre; with weird and wonderful exhibitions all year round and screenings of both alternative and mainstream films, it’s the perfect date venue. Providing plenty of conversation!
There's also a few options for food and drink, whether you just want to stop for a cup of tea or grab a pre-cinema glass of wine. AND you can take your drinks into the screens too!  FACT is far better than your average cinema date and well worth a visit even if you don’t have a date in tow!

5) A Walk along Crosby Beach

Img Src: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosby_Beach

Stretching 3 miles from the Seaforth Dock to the estuary of the River Alt, Crosby Beach is a beautiful location for stroll. Pack a picnic hamper and head out on a sunny day to enjoy the scenery at its best; or if you’re feeling adventurous get the bikes out! The Beach has cycle paths that offer a leisurely ride.

Liverpool has so much to offer, and there are hundreds of places that we haven't been able to try out yet! We'd love to hear your recommendations in the comments below...
So now you've decided on the venue, Hop along to Flirtify and find your date! >>
We’ve listed our top 10 city breaks in Europe, perfect for anyone planning a romantic getaway or short city break. Including some of the best stag destinations and hen weekends in Europe! So if you need some inspiration then read on…

1) Paris, France
Because in the words of Audrey Hepburn...“Paris is always a good idea"...
There are so many iconic tourist attractions to visit whilst in Paris; Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame and Sainte-Chapelle to name a few. And of course, the Eiffel Tower! It’s a bit of a trek but the views make climbing the tower worth it.

The French capital has a great selection of museums and art galleries, but there are two that must be visited before you leave. Firstly, Musee d’Orsay; housed in a former Railway station, this museum boasts the best collection of impressionist paintings in the world and hosts spectacular exhibitions every year. And secondly, Musee du Louvre; the home of Mona Lisa  and Venus De Milo.

Spend the evenings dining on fabulous French cuisine, and if the budget allows head to Palais deGarnier for a night of opera, for a true Parisian experience.
2) Venice, Italy

Think Gondolas, gelatos and romance! If you’re planning on whisking a loved one away for a romantic getaway, then hop on a plane to Venice and start wooing! Grab a bottle of Venetian Vino, a singing Gondolier and punt down the city’s picturesque waterways - it’s as magical as the movies make out, and perfect for creating those ever-lasting memories.
But you know, Venice isn’t all about the Gondola… For centuries it’s provided inspiration to artists, musicians and writers across the world – and there are signs of this dotted around the city. If you want to see the Venetian Masters, then a trip to the famous Gallerie dell’Accademia is a must. The city’s principle opera house La Fenice, hosts at least two concert seasons a year so make sure you check out what’s on, you don’t want to miss out on hearing Vivaldi in Venice!

Venice is famed for its beautiful seafood, so spend the evenings enjoying sumptuous dishes with a glass of Prosecco at a waterside bar, and soak up the unique beauty of this charming city.
3) Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is one of the best destinations for stag dos and hen weekends in Europe, but it has loads to offer loved-up couples too.
The city prides itself in their locally produced beer; most popular for the locals is Gambrinus, but Kozel’s Medium and Pilsner Urquell are equally loved. Have a read of Time Out’s feature ‘Prague’s beers, breweries & tank pubs’ for a comprehensive description of all things beer…

With a fusion of different styles and influences, the cityscape is stunning. Visit Prague Castle for a taste of this eclectic architecture; with towering, Gothic Spires, a Grand Old Royal Palace and a museum. The Castle is also home to many cultural events, including jazz evenings, exhibitions and theatre – so plan your visit ahead.
And obviously, the clubbing scene - Prague is famed for its vibrant nightlife. Clubs play tunes from dusk till dawn, an amazing place for all party goers.

4) Dublin, Ireland
If you’re a real music lover, then Dublin is a must! The city has a great music scene, and you won’t have to go far to enjoy a night of live music. Temple Bar is a great place to start, with loads of pubs and bars you’re guaranteed to stumble upon a local music gem! And for any Thin Lizzy fans, you can pay your music respects to a statue of bassist Phil Lynott (outside Bruxelles, a music bar on Harry Street)
It would be sacrilege to go to Ireland and not visit the Guinness Factory. You’ll learn everything you ever wanted to about the beer, and can enjoy a pint of the stuff in the Gravity Bar which has breath-taking views across Dublin city.

Full of character and charm, with an abundance of attractions and events, Dublin is a wonderful destination for a long weekend.

5) Edinburgh, Scotland

If you can, book your short break in Scotland during the Edinburgh festival. The festival hosts a variety of art exhibitions, gigs & concerts, theatre productions, literature events and just about any other ‘artsy’ thing you can think of. The festival activities begin from mid-June and end at the beginning of September, so around this time the city is buzzing!
If you can’t make it during those months, then not to worry – there are plenty of things going on all year round. A trip to Edinburgh Castle should be on the agenda, as well as a walk up the tallest of Edinburgh’s seven hills to sit upon Arthur’s Seat. Take a picnic (and perhaps a wee dram of whiskey!) and enjoy the magnificent views of the city.

Talking of whiskey, no trip to Edinburgh would be complete without the Scotch Whiskey ExperienceTour. Visit the whiskey shop, and go on an hour long tour to learn all there is to know about the Scot’s tipple of choice.

For dining, Edinburgh has loads of fantastic restaurants to choose from! If you’re feeling flash then Michelin starred restaurant, Castle Terrace is a good choice!
6) Berlin, Germany

Germany’s capital embraces all that is cool, edgy, and fashionable. It’s the ideal location for a party weekend, or for anyone who wants to lose themselves in music, art and beer for a few days!
It also has an incredibly rich culture and is steeped in history, which you can see in the jumbled styles and influences of architecture and monuments. There is no better place to discover all that the city has to offer, than The Reichstag (home of the German Parliament). The glass structured roof offers panoramic views of the city.

If it’s the music scene you’re after, then Berlin has everything you could possibly want. Techno, Drum & Bass, Punk, Pop and Hip-Hop, there’s something for everyone on every-day of the week. And with after parties and day-time clubs, you can literally party ALL weekend!
There’s an abundance of activities and attractions that you can check out during the day too. Walking the Berlin Wall should be at the top of the to-do list; although demolished in 1990, part of the wall has been restored along the southern border of Wedding and Mitte. At Check Point Charlie, there’s a tourist centre where comprehensive display boards tell the wall’s story.

Berlin’s art scene is flourishing, with the Kulturforum housing world-class galleries. The best way to experience the Kulturforum is during the Long Night of the Museums, where you can explore the museums until 2.00am! (Check dates here!)
This is just a snippet of the wonderful things going on in Berlin, it’s a treasure of a city that needs to be visited to be fully appreciated…

7) Rome, Italy
Rome was not built in a day, and you definitely won’t see everything it has to offer in a short weekend. But, throw a coin in the Trevvi Fountain and your return is inevitable! For that first trip begin with an open top bus tour of the city. It’s a great way to see the awe-inspiring architecture, and visit the famous attractions without wearing your feet down. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Pantheon are just a few monuments of Ancient Rome that you must see.
If yours is a mid-week trip, make sure to visit the Vatican on a Wednesday morning for an audience with the Pope. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s a special occasion that will provide an unforgettable experience. And whilst you’re there, take the opportunity to admire Michel Angelo’s stunning frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and wander through St.Peter’s Basillica.

In the evening you won’t have to go far to experience wonderful food! Rich in flavour and character, Rome is famous for its delicious cuisine. So relax with an authentic Italian Pizza and a bottle of Frascati wine.

8) Barcelona, Spain
When visiting a new city one of the best things to do first is explore its history. So, if you’re planning a trip to Barcelona, we’d suggest going to Museu d’Historia de Barcelona first; here you can explore archaeological remains of the city and learn all about its heritage. However, you don’t need to go to a museum to learn about Barcelona’s architectural delights! You’ll come across many works of Antoni Gaudi in particular, including the famous Sagrada Familia and the beautiful city garden, Guell Park, by just wandering the through the city.
After a day of site seeing, sit down to tasty tapas and an ice cold beer or glass of vermouth in one of Barcelona’s many bars and restaurants. Barcelona also has over 4km of beaches, with plenty of beach bars.

With a vibrant nightlife, a couple of days in Barcelona will have you feeling refreshed and relaxed!

9) London, UK
A diverse and exciting city, a weekend in London is a great option if your time limits mean that an overseas trip is a no-no.
Book a ride on the LondonEye where you can view the stunning skyline, followed by a day visiting top London attractions like Madame Tussauds and the NaturalHistory Museum. And of course, no day out in London would be complete without having a wander around the shops! Visit the iconic Harrods for a little luxury, Hamleys for that inner child and pick up some tasty treats at Fortnum & Mason (the Queens official grocer!)

In the evening, make the most of the glittering West End and book yourselves a theatre and meal package (there’s lots to choose from at lastminute.com. For a magical experience check out Wicked, for a classic it has to be The Sound of Music, or if you have the family in tow The Lion King is a great option. These are just a few of the many shows that London has to offer.

With so much to see and do, come the end of your trip you’ll no doubt be exhausted! So book yourself on a relaxing River Cruise along the Thames, sit back and relax.
If you want a few alternative ideas, check out our Top 10 Dates in London blog.

10) Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, is fast becoming the place to go for a short city break. With hip arestaurants, bars and galleries popping up throughout the city, and its rich cultural history to explore, there is enough to keep you busy for a few days!

Its wealth of architecture is a feast for the eyes, and as soon as you step foot in the city you’ll get lost in its charm and grandeur. Highlights include the Blue Mosque, an excellent example of classical Ottoman architecture, Topkapi Palace, the largest and oldest palace in the world, and the Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s largest covered markets. There is more than enough to keep you occupied through the day, and at night time the city really comes alive…
For an evening of great food and drink head to Beyoğlu, or relax and unwind at one of the charming tea gardens that can be found in the back streets of Sultanahmet’s Old Town.

Happy Thursday everyone! X

Student beans recently published the University Sex League of 2014, a survey that seeks to find out the average amount of sexual partners for university students. Topping the league with an average of 10.59 was the University of Brighton, and at the bottom was Bath Spa with 2.57.

The number of sexual partners and what is 'good' and 'not good' has always been debated. Women with a high number have been deemed 'promiscuous,' men with a low number 'in-experienced.' Both terms, can be pretty hurtful, and the debate itself is riddled with sexist beliefs and insinuations. So in the 21st Century, are we still judging potential partners on their sexual history? And if we are, what is the acceptable 'magic number?'

Nikki Howarth, a party planner who was interviewed by the Daily Mail, said that for men 10 is fine, “you want to date a man who is confident and knows what he is doing sexually,’ but her advice to girls was to keep quiet on revealing their number:

‘Don’t tell, particularly if you’re figure is above 10. Most guys will think the worst of you.’

The problem is, as much as that statement will anger many people – there is sadly some truth in it. Some guys would perhaps think less of a woman if her number delved into the double digits, but why? Maybe it's the woman's problem and she's just too sexually active. Hmm. Or maybe, this sort of judgement is used to cover up this particular guys insecurities.

Men tend to get a much better deal in this instance, usually getting a high-five for reaching double digits. But there are those that question whether 'spreading the seed' far and wide, is really all that it's cracked up to be. Author Tony Parsons in an article for GQ magazine wrote regretfully about not remembering a lot of his sexual partners and how this is a problem for a lot of guys out there:

“Most readers of this magazine will have 10 lovers that they have completely forgotten. That is nothing to be proud of – just the sad and wistful truth, a cruel fact of our busy lives.”

With hook-up apps becoming the norm, Universities being judged by how much sex their students are having, and the media monetizing more than ever on sex, it’s not surprising that our numbers are getting higher and higher. Reading Parsons's article raises an interesting question; is casual sex actually fulfilling, or are we just doing it because we think everyone else is?

So, what do we think?

Firstly, the idea that if a woman (or a man) has had what is deemed to be ‘too many’ sexual partners, they’re viewed as damaged goods, is stupid and should be disregarded, as should any one that believes it. Secondly, you need to be comfortable with your number – high or low. And if you’re not, you need to question why and address the reason. Sex should be about intimacy and discovery, and in our view it’s better when it’s with someone you care about and feel comfortable with…’quality over quantity,’ and all that. But that’s subjective; we would by no means say that this is the ‘universal truth.’
Marie Claire did a feature last year, “What’s your number? 5 women tally up their sexual score,” and one of those women made a very good point. Raised as a Presbyterian, she believed in no sex before marriage and when asked whether it would matter how many sexual partners her boyfriend had she said:

“In a perfect world, I’ll marry a virgin; but if he’s the right guy for me, it ultimately won’t matter.”

And that’s just it, if it’s the right person your number won’t matter.
