Benching is the new dating term you need to know about (it has nothing to do with benches and it’s even more annoying than ghosting).
Remember‘Ghosting’...
A way to perfectly describe all the dates that had disappeared from our lives without reason or notice?

Well, there’s a new way to describe the massive idiot in your life who you’re interested in but who stops actually seeing you, hanging out with you or committing to dates - but and here the best bit - continues to text, tweet, or snapchat you. Rude!

Been benched? We hear you!

Confused…
think of team sports. When you’re benched, you’re not actually playing. But you’re still on the team, ready and waiting for when the coach decides to bring you back into play.

The problem isn’t new; you may have heard it before from parents being described as ‘led on’.

It’s horrible, because there’s no way to have a clean break or move on. Just when you’re giving up, you’ll get a non-committal but flirty text appears.

How to spot one...
These people will make the minimum effort required to keep you as an available option - which often means no face-to-face contact - just frequent texts about plans to meet up that never end up happening.

It can be deeply frustrating and disappointing, especially if you really like them!

So if you do suspect you’re being benched; meetups become less frequent, texts go unanswered, but they’ll suddenly get in touch just as you’re about to give up then our advice is to call them on it. Ask why your plans never work out or give yourself a clean break and move on - you deserve better after all!

And they're all free!
Absence makes the heart grow fonder – apparently. Or maybe it’s forgetful depending on what you believe, but whatever that is, one thing can’t be denied. That long distance relationships are tough.
It’s a position that more and more of us are finding ourselves in; different unis, career goals, extortionate rent hikes, commuting costs, family and yes, online dating are just some of the reasons.

So what can we do?
Well, thank goodness for technology!!!!  Technology is making long distance love slightly easier, with some quirky new ways to keep in touch. Here’s a list of some of the best apps out there…

Couple
Available on iOS and AndroidCouple is more than just a messaging service (cliché we know, but it is); it creates a private social network between the two of you. The app allows you to send your loved one messages, photos and videos as well as setting up a shared calendar for you to sync events and create to-do lists together – so you can make the most of the time you do spend together! The USP is in its interactive features, such as ‘Live Sketch’ that lets the two of you to draw pictures together, and ‘Thumb Kiss’ – when each user places their thumb on the same space on their touch screen – nawwww! Both phones will vibrate as if you’ve just kissed.

Without
Available on Android
Much like Couple, Without allows you to connect with only one other person – sorry serial daters! The app has a feature which allows you to tap a button and send your partner a cute message, and updates you on what the weather’s like in your loved one’s location. The best bit is Without counts how many days the two of you have been apart by using your phone’s Bluetooth and detects when you are near each other. Imagine sitting in the station waiting for them to arrive on the train and seeing them edge closer and closer – we’re excited just thinking about this.

HeyTell
Available on iOS and Android
With HeyTell you can send high quality voice recordings anywhere around the world - for free. It’s quicker than a text message and uses less data than sending an email. You can record messages for one another and listen to your partners voice anytime. Ideal if you’re in completely separate time zones, meaning Skype calls are out of the question unless you like the 4am I’ve had no sleep look!

Rabbit
Available on iOS and Android
Goodness no, we do not mean the Ann Summers dating app… instead and despite the name, Rabbit is perfect for couples who love a good Netflix binge. The site allows you to create a room where you can invite up to 25 people inside and video chat – so Skype you’re thinking. But Rabbit’s USP lies in its ability for those inside a room to share a screen in real time, letting couples watch their favourite shows together – date night sorted! No matter how many miles away, Netflix prevails!

My Day
Available on iOS and Android
If you’re like us and instantly start counting down until the next time then My Day is perfect! It’s a countdown app that lets you keep track of special events either of you may have coming up – anniversaries, weekend dates, holidays together –  My Day counts right to the second until the day you set. The app enables push notifications for you to get a reminder about what’s coming up, perfect if one of you is a little forgetful.

‘If you’re truly in love or committed to your relationship, it’s much easier to stay faithful’ - seems pretty obvious, right?!

A new study from researchers at New York University and Rutgers University found that when people are trying to protect the sanctity of their monogamous relationship, they will internally conduct what we’re calling a ‘perceptive downgrade’ of potentially attractive people – put simply – someone you may have considered attractive when you were single suddenly becomes less attractive now that you’re in a good relationship.

It’s almost sweet in a way.

The science
Researchers who carried out the study said, “People in relationships perceived threatening attractive individuals as less attractive than did single participants” “The effect was exacerbated among participants who were highly satisfied with their current relationships.”

Why do those in happy relationships downgrade people that their single counterparts would probably find more attractive?
It’s a natural reaction, a psychological way of protecting our relationships. If you only have eyes for your significant other, you really only have eyes for your significant other. This psychological guard can protect your relationship and prevent eyes straying elsewhere if you’re deeply in love with your partner.

That’s the good news, now for the sad news…
Unfortunately, the effect is reversed if you’re unhappy with your relationship. If you’re not happy or feeling loved in your current relationships you’re much more likely to agree with your single friends that that guy or girl is pretty good looking.

This got us thinking; do some people not only downgrade attractive people, but also treat them differently to avoid giving off the wrong signals? Perhaps! And what about celebrities? For some of us, Ryan Gosling will be attractive no matter how happy we are in our current relationship – and who can blame you!?

Science can’t explain everything all of the time we guess!
